Inscription (below picture of rock; enlarged in lower view): "To the Revd Charles Lyttleton LLD Dean of Exeter. This Tolmen in Constantine Parish in Cornwall is most gratefully inscrib’d by Wm. Borlase"
See: "The History of Constantine," by Charles Henderson (Royal Institution of Cornwall, Truro, 1937); also: Journal of the RIC, 1925. Dr William Borlase was the first to describe it in print. He gives an engraving of it in his Antiquities of Cornwall (1769). Maen Rock, also called Maen Toll (hence Tolmen: see dictionary reference below) was 33 feet long and 14½ feet high, and probably weighed about 400 tons. The upper surface was honeycombed with rock basins, caused by the action of weather but attributed by Dr Borlase to the Druids. The rock was located at the lip of a quarry about 3 miles north of Constantine, and by 1869 its situation had become dangerous. "Had the owner appealed for compensation, a public fund would have been raised for its preservation; as it was, the mighty rock was toppled over [by vandals] into the quarry beneath and smashed to pieces on March 9th, 1869." Indignation over this vandalism led eventually to the Ancient Monuments Act calling for preservation of similar rocks. A neighboring rock called Devil’s Nightcap still stands nearby. The photographer was John Beringer Jr, who was established in Helston by 1862. See "Views and Likenesses," by Charles Thomas (RIC, 1988). This photo is probably taken from Borlase’s engraving. Webster Dictionary, 1913: Tol"men, n. See Dolmen. Dol"men, n. [Armor. taol, tol, table + mean, maen, men, stone: cf. F. dolmen.] A cromlech. See Cromlech. [Written also tolmen.] Crom"lech (kr?m"lk), n. [W. cromlech; crom bending or bent, concave + llech a flat stone; akin to Ir. cromleac.] (Archol.) A monument of rough stones composed of one or more large ones supported in a horizontal position upon others. They are found chiefly in countries inhabited by the ancient Celts, and are of a period anterior to the introduction of Christianity into these countries. |

Karen
(Lupton) Giblin email Jun 2005: According to the
certified records of births, deaths and marriages from the Public
Records office in London, Mary Ann Lupton's mother was Jane Stubbs. Her
father, Samuel, was a weaver in Knaresborough.

KG: Mary Ann was born in Knaresborough on May 26, 1839, daughter of
Samuel Lupton, weaver, and Jane Stubbs. Her parents must have died
young, because she came to Jo Daviess Co around 1850, and was raised by
the family of John and Mary Ann (Jackson) Lupton, (older brother of my
great-grandfather, Samuel) who lived first in Thompson Township, then
Council Hill, and lastly, East Galena Township. Throughout the census
records, she was always identified as a "cousin." [See note
below]
=
KG: Today, January 2, 2005, I have begun the new year by finally solving
the mystery of the identity of "Mrs. Charles Reed" of Apple River, IL,
the "COUSIN" who attended the funeral of my great-grandfather, Samuel
Lupton, when he died in 1906.
=
Census records of Jo Daviess Co indicated that a cousin, Mary Ann
Lupton, was raised by the family of John Lupton, Jr., the older brother
of my great-grandfather. She was not present on the Lapland ship which
sailed from Liverpool, Eng New Orleans in 1846, but by 1850 she was
residing with the John Lupton Jr family in Thompson Twp, and later
Council Hill and East Galena in Jo Daviess Co IL.
=
During the late 1970's, I made a genealogical excursion to Jo Daviess
Co, IL, the ancestral home in America for my father's Lupton ancestors.
While in the Jo Daviess Co courthouse, I discovered the marriage record
of Mary Ann Lupton to Charles Reed of Apple River. Census records of Jo
Daviess Co indicated that she was probably born in May 1839. The
International Genealogical Index (IGI) at the Family History Center of
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints indicated that a Mary
Ann Lupton, daughter of Samuel and Jane, was baptized at Knaresborough,
Yorkshire on June 21, 1839.
=
Later, I obtained the civil registration of her birth, which indicated
that a Mary Ann Lupton, daughter of Samuel Lupton and Jane Stubbs was
born May 23, 1839 in Knaresborough. I still did not know for certain
that Mary Ann Lupton, born in Knaresborough, and Mary Ann Reed were one
and the same until I discovered the burial record of Charles and Mary
Ann Reed on the Internet, courtesy of IL GenWeb Projects. The cemetery
is just north of Apple River in Wisconsin, and known variously as
Roberts, Levitt and West Ella Highland Cemetery. According to the
gravestone inscription, Mary Ann Lupton was born May 26, 1839, three
days later than the birth record from London, the latter which I have
entered as an alternate date of birth. |

John (Cornelius) m inf [1848?]
=
Note: Cornelius (1843-1845) and Elizabeth (b 1846 - died in infancy) had
died in England; John Cornelius died at sea; both parents Samuel and
Jane died in New Orleans. Mary Ann and Charles started up river to IL to
the home of their cousin John 5 and wife Mary Ann (Jackson) Lupton who
had come to America in 1846, but Charles died “en route,” leaving Mary
Ann as the sole surviving family member.
=
Current “best guess” (as of Jan 2011) is that Mary (widow of Samuel’s
brother William) and all her children, who left Liverpool on the same
ship Brandon, also died in the cholera epidemic, since none of them has
been found elsewhere in America.
= = =
http://mymedicalbase.com/cholera-epidemic-in-1849/ Cholera Epidemic in
1849
= The cholera epidemic of 1849 was a major outbreak of the disease in
Europe and the United States. It is a part of the Second cholera
pandemic that started in 1829 (in the Indian subcontinent, where the
First cholera pandemic also originated). The Second cholera pandemic
reached Europe and North America in 1832, but both regions were more
severely hit by cholera in 1849.
= The most severe outbreak of the 1849 cholera epidemic occurred at
London, killing over 14,000 of the city’s residents - twice as many as
the 1832 cholera outbreak. The disease also broke out in Ireland,
killing many people who survived the Irish Famine (1845-1852). More than
5,000 people died of cholera in Liverpool, and nearly 1,900 in Hull. The
epidemic also hit the United States in 1849 and spread – most likely by
English ships - throughout the Mississippi valley, killing more than
4,000 of St Louis’s residents and claiming more than 3,000 lives in New
Orleans. Thousands of people also died in New York. An estimated 6,000
to 12,000 people died from cholera infection on their way to the
California Gold Rush, Oregon and Utah along the California, Oregon and
Mormon trails. Over 150,000 people are estimated to have been killed by
cholera infection in the United States between 1832 and 1849.
= In 1849 it had not been recognized that the main source of cholera
infection is contaminated water - it was believed that the disease is
caused by miasma or “bad air.” It was not till the Second cholera
pandemic subsided that English physician Dr John Snow connected cholera
to contaminated water in 1854.
= (Wiki:) The 1849 epidemic probably also claimed the life of former US
President James K Polk (b 1795, President 1845–Mar 1849, d Jun 1849).
After the his term ended Polk “exhausted by his years of public service
... is believed to have contracted cholera in New Orleans, during a
goodwill tour of the South.”
